Texas Physicians for Social Responsibility Statement on Military Escalation, Humanitarian Crisis, and Nuclear Risk in the Middle East August 6, 2025

Texas Physicians for Social Responsibility (Texas PSR) strongly condemns the recent military attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities—whether carried out by Israeli or United States forces. These escalatory acts are reckless and dangerous. They increase the likelihood of a broader regional war, put civilian lives at grave risk, and undermine global efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. Strikes on nuclear sites also pose catastrophic health and environmental risks due to the potential release of radioactive material.

Texas PSR joins National Physicians for Social Responsibility and many other PSR chapters across the country in strongly supporting the June 13 statement from International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). As American healthcare professionals, we are deeply concerned by the United States’ participation in military actions that could ignite a nuclear crisis. We call on the United States and all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and commit to diplomacy, not destruction.

In light of the currently negotiated ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Texas PSR urges both nations—and all involved governments—to fully adhere to and uphold the ceasefire agreement. We call for robust international diplomatic engagement to ensure that the truce is respected, sustained, and expanded to prevent further violence and avoid an escalation into a full-scale conflict involving nuclear-armed states.

Additionally, we remain profoundly alarmed by the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Since the brutal and unprecedented Hamas attack on October 7, 2023—which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel, including civilians and children—over 56,000 people, primarily Palestinian civilians, have been killed in the ensuing conflict. Israeli military assaults have devastated healthcare systems, targeted medical workers, and obstructed the delivery of lifesaving aid. Texas PSR joins the broader PSR and IPPNW community in demanding that Israel uphold international humanitarian law and restore full humanitarian access to Gaza’s starving and traumatized population.

In the longer term, Texas PSR urges the international community to prioritize diplomatic solutions to regional tensions. We support renewed efforts to establish a weapons of mass destruction–free zone in the Middle East—including nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons—and call on all nations to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as a critical step toward global nuclear disarmament.

Our mission remains clear: to eliminate nuclear weapons and prevent nuclear war for the health, safety, and future of all people and the planet. In this time of grave crisis, we stand in unwavering solidarity with the global medical and peace communities and reaffirm our commitment to justice, diplomacy, and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
